Born in South Korea, soprano Hye-Young Moon graduated from Seoul National University and continued her studies at The Juilliard School in New York, where she earned her Master of Music degree.
During her studies, she made her international debut singing Korean art songs by Kyuyoung Chin at the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre in Ufa, Russia at the age of 20. She later appeared at Lotte Concert Hall in Korea with the Hankyung Philharmonic Orchestra. At Juilliard, she performed roles including Agilea in Handel’s <Teseo>, Euridice in <L’Orfeo>, and Anne Trulove in <The Rake’s Progress>.
In the 2022/23 season, Hye-Young Moon joined the ensemble of Deutsche Oper Berlin, where she quickly established herself as a lyric coloratura soprano with a wide-ranging repertoire. In her first seasons with the company, she appeared as Königin der Nacht in <Die Zauberflöte>, Fiakermilli in <Arabella>, Frasquita in <Carmen>, Countess Ceprano in <Rigoletto>, Ellen in <Lakmé>, and Sandmännchen/Taumännchen in <Hänsel und Gretel> at the Royal Opera House Muscat.
In the following seasons, she continued to expand her repertoire at Deutsche Oper Berlin with important role debuts including Contessa di Folleville in <Il viaggio a Reims>, Madame Mao in <Nixon in China>, Lou in the world premiere of <BETA> by Christiane Mudra and Dariya Maminova, Blumenmädchen in <Parsifal>. She also continued to perform Königin der Nacht in Berlin and with the Korea National Opera.
In the 2024/25 season, Hye-Young Moon made her debut as Gilda in Rigoletto at Deutsche Oper Berlin, becoming the first Korean soprano to sing the role at the company. In the same season, she also made her debut as Pamina in <Die Zauberflöte> and appeared as Chiang Ch’ing, Madame Mao, in <Nixon in China>, Contessa di Folleville in <Il viaggio a Reims>, and Fiakermilli in <Arabella>, and multiple roles in <Die Frau ohne Schatten>. She made her Swiss debut at Bühnen Bern as Fiakermilli in a new production of <Arabella> and also appeared at Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin as Königin der Nacht in <Die Zauberflöte> and Dienerin/Kinderstimme in <Die Frau ohne Schatten>.
In the 2025/26 season, she continues her work at Deutsche Oper Berlin with further role debuts including Elvira in <L’italiana in Algeri>, Garsenda in <Francesca da Rimini>, Barbarina in <Le nozze di Figaro>, Hirt in <Tannhäuser>, Voce dal Cielo in <Don Carlo>, and Erste Magd in <Violanta>, while continuing to sing Königin der Nacht.
Hye-Young Moon has collaborated with conductors including Sir Donald Runnicles, Michele Spotti, Daniel Carter, Nicholas Carter, Dominic Limburg, Friedrich Praetorius, Giulio Cilona, Tarmo Peltokoski, and Eva Ollikainen. She has worked with stage directors such as Tobias Kratzer, Rolando Villazón, Marco Štorman, Louisa Müller, Christiane Mudra, and Hauen und Stechen.
Alongside her operatic work, Hye-Young Moon regularly appears in concerts. She has sung Orff’s <Carmina Burana> with Philharmonia Pomorska in Poland and in Frankfurt (Oder) and made her <Handel Messiah> debut at the Bydgoszcz Music Festival. She also sang at Berlin Philharmonie with Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt as <Carmina Burana> soprano solo.
Future engagements include Madame Mao in <Nixon in China> at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Gilda in <Rigoletto> with Seoul Metropolitan Opera, and Olympia in <Les contes d’Hoffmann> at Opera Wrocławska.
